A first date works best somewhere central, public and easy to leave if you need to. Newcastle is good at this, because some of its best places are free and only a short walk apart. Here are three that make meeting someone new feel simple.
The Laing Art Gallery
The Laing is free, needs no booking and sits right in the centre on New Bridge Street. On the Sundays in the run-up to Christmas it opens specially, on 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December, from 11am to 4pm.

Great North Museum: Hancock
The Hancock at Barras Bridge is open daily and free, with a replica T. rex skeleton in the Fossil Stories gallery. The planetarium has a small charge, and Haymarket is the nearest Metro station.

The Christmas market
In winter, stalls fill Grey Street, Grainger Street and Nelson Street, with more than 70 traders, mostly from the region. Old Eldon Square has a Christmas Village with a Ferris wheel. Dates and hours are published each year, so check before you go.

Questions
Where is a good daytime first date in Newcastle?
A free gallery or museum is hard to beat. The Laing and the Great North Museum: Hancock are both free and central, so there is no pressure on either of you.
Is the Laing open on Sundays?
Usually not. It is open Monday to Saturday, with special Sunday openings in late November and December. Check the North East Museums website before you go.
Can we cross to Gateshead easily?
Yes. BALTIC is on the Gateshead side of the river, a short walk over the bridges from the Quayside, and it is free to visit Wednesday to Sunday.
